Member Review: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

BPD subscriber Bilfus sent us this report:
Tom Petty was anything but Freefallin' for his 2010 Mojo Tour.

The 59-year-old and his long-time band The Heartbreakers may have physically slowed a little with age, but they sounded as taut and energetic as ever during the two-hour-long concert. Petty's stage setup was simple and there wasn't much of a light show. But Petty doesn't need the flash of some modern bands. That's because he's got the songs.

The interplay between Petty and lead guitarist Mike Campbell was relaxed, but even after so many years together they never looked bored to be in each other's company.

The band was rounded out by bassist Ron Blair, guitarist Scott Thurston, drummer Steve Ferrone and Benmont Tench on piano.

A bearded Petty wandered back and forth across the stage making sure he acknowledged the fans who came to see him play some of his biggest hits, including You Don't Know How It Feels, Freefallin', Don't Come Around Here No More and Learning to Fly, all of which were met by huge cheers and a loud sing-a-long by the happy crowd.

Petty's 1979 single Refugee and I Won't Back Down from his 1989 album Full Moon Fever sounded as defiant and spirited as when they were first released. They were just two of many songs that showcased his superb songwriting skill.

Even the slow moments and overlong jams weren't too painful thanks to the phenomenal musicianship of every person on that stage. There were, of course, long, languid guitar solos. But they were tastefully executed and wrapped up before they overstayed their welcome.

Petty and The Heartbreakers delved into their new album Mojo a couple of times, but the songs they chose -- such as the full-on rocker, I'm Driving Down to Georgia -- were consistent with the vibe of the evening.

As enjoyable as his performance was, I wasn't there to see Tom and the HB.

I was there to have a reunion with my friend and former neighbor in Colorado, the great Joe Cocker.

The 'Sheffield Soul Shouter' got things rolling straight away with a note-perfect rendition of Feelin' Alright before moving onto softer '70s and '80s fare. While the 1974 ballad You Are So Beautiful and his 1983 Grammy-winning duet Up Where We Belong are two of his biggest hits, they paled in comparison to his bluesier and more soulful numbers, where his raspy growl was better utilized.

Joe also seemed more animated when he was singing songs with a little more edge and a little less sap.

His version of The Beatles' Come Together was more raw than slinky, although his two female backing vocalists added some sex appeal.

In fact, his entire eight-piece band was remarkable -- from Mike Finnigan on Hammond organ to Oneida James on bass, the musicians were air-tight and possessed the hard groove of a classic soul revue.

Despite the few moments of cheese, Cocker and his band hit their stride on set highlights, Unchain My Heart and With a Little Help From My Friends.

Joe is now 66, yet he still punctuated the ends of songs with little jumps and air punches.

Watching him from backstage, and watching Petty with Joe beside me, made for a delicious, delicious night.

Sounds like you had one helluva time, Bilfus.

Review: Paul McCartney @Coachella

From several sources comes this compiled review of Paul on Day One of Coachella:
Hip comes and hip goes, but McCartney proved once again, a great pop song lasts forever. Energized by the desert air and memory of his late wife, a playful and passionate Paul McCartney riffed on "Foxy Lady," led an after-midnight "Hey Jude" singalong and dedicated songs to his former bandmates at the Coachella music festival that kicked off Friday.

McCartney took off his black jacket five songs in and didn't put it back on for the next 29, strutting the stage in boots, black pants, a white shirt and suspenders that he tugged at wryly.

"It's going to be a good weekend, dear," he told the crowd of thousands gathered for the three-day festival, which erupted in cheers with the first chords of Beatles tunes like "Eleanor Rigby." It was McCartney's first appearance at a U.S. festival as a solo artist.

The Beatle performed for nearly three hours, delighting fans with a career-spanning set, and one that went well past the midnight curfew for music on the main stage imposed by the city of Indio. In the set, including two encores, McCartney dedicated "Long and Winding Road" and "My Love Does It Good" to his late wife Linda, who died at the couple's ranch at Tucson, Ariz., 11 years earlier to the day.

"It's an emotional day for me. That's good, that's OK," he said, pounding his chest. "Lot of heart, lot of emotion."

Before a moving performance of "Blackbird," he noted that it had been written in response to the 60s civil rights movement. "Now you've got President Obama. Yeah, you know we've come a long way."

Switching from serious to cheerily self-aware, he led call-and-response chants only to wave them off quickly as "messing around," and dismissed signs held by front-row fans — including one that asked for his guitar pick.

"No! It's mine!" McCartney said. "Anyway, if I make a mistake, I can blame the signs."

McCartney launched brightly into "Something" with only his voice and a ukulele he said was given to him by George Harrison, before his band mates and the crowd joined in.

There were mistakes. McCartney was proficient but sometimes out-of-sync with the four-man band backing him. But he clearly enjoyed himself, plowing through songs from his "Fireman" album, "Band on the Run" from the Wings, and Fab Four favorites like "Back in the USSR," "Paperback Writer" and, for the finale, "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band."

The first day of the festival also featured Morrissey, Leonard Cohen, the Hold Steady, Franz Ferdinand and the Ting Tings.

There are plenty of great festivals still on tap for the months ahead. Request your passes by joining BackstagePassDirect today.

Member Review: Nickelback

Member Nicklmaniac wrote:

Nickelback has spent years dodging the slings and arrows -- not to mention knives, bottles, bricks and small mammals -- launched at them by an outraged music press.

Despite the insistence of music press tastemakers that Nickelback is quite simply the worst thing ever to be recorded on to any audio format, the band continues to sell boatloads of CDs. Why? you ask.

Chad Kroeger told me back in 2000 when Nickelback was touring its second album, The State, people just want to hear something they can sing along to in the car. That's really it; the group's songs are catchy.

Simplistic, sure, but he was onto something as almost a decade later Nickelback is one of the most successful rock bands of the past 20 years.

Last night's show featured a few songs from Nickelback's latest release, Dark Horse, which rode off with Album of the Year at last weekend's Juno Awards.

But it was the hits that the crowd came to hear and Nickelback delivered them -- Photograph, Savin' Me, Figured You Out and Far Away were just a few that got the audience on their feet during the first half of the show.

The band loves its pyrotechnics and used them several times throughout the show, including the first song, Something In Your Mouth.

Chad, along with brother and bass player Mike Kroeger, guitarist Ryan Peake and drummer Daniel Adair played with an impressive energy and confidence.

It's really funny. The band really does have some of the worst lyrics in modern rock history. Something In Your Mouth and Figured You Out are the worst offenders, bearing the brunt of Kroeger's ham-fisted double entendres and somewhat sexist humour. But I will give Kroeger credit for standing his ground and making music for the everyman when he's been told time and again it's not the cool thing to do.

The "Meet and Greet" with the band was a little shorter than I would have liked, but I enjoyed the time very much and was able to catch up with them about what's been happening over the last 9 years.

I've read a couple of reviews here recently where the writer forget to give props to BackstagePassDirect. Not me. BPD - you're Numero Uno!

Two Legends, One Month, 14 Shows

Eric Clapton. Steve Winwood.

The names say it all. Two of the biggest legends in rock are again joining forces in a sweet co-headline, 14-city U.S. tour beginning June 10 in New Jersey.

Of course, this isn’t the first time the two rockers have worked together. Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood were charter members, along with Ginger Baker and Rick Grech, of the 1969 super group Blind Faith.

More recently, Clapton and Winwood played the 2007 Chicago Crossroads Festival. Then, they did three nights at New York’s Madison Square Garden in 2008, considered the first full Winwood / Clapton concerts in 40 years.

Now, they are re-uniting for 14 shows across the U.S. in June.

Member Review: The Pretenders

Member "NewMom2B" wrote:

Chrissie Hynde and the Pretenders, with drummer Martin Chambers the only other remaining original member, rocked us on Mardi Gras night with a mixture of tunes old (“Talk of The Town,” “Message of Love,” “Back on the Chain Gang”) and new (“Don’t Cut Your Hair,” “Rosalee, “Love’s A Mystery”) in promoting their ninth and most recent album, the terrific Break Up the Concrete.

Hynde, an American girl (Akron, Ohio) who formed the group with three British males in 1978, is still going strong at age 57 even while flecks of gray start appearing among those trademark black bangs. She refuses to sit on her Rock and Roll Hall of Fame laurels (Class of 2005, with U2) or turn into a bland nostalgia act that winds up playing in casino bars and hotel lounges.

The Pretenders hit the stage to the recorded sounds of “On the Street Where You Live” from My Fair Lady. Still looking as cool as she did on the cover of Pretenders II in 1981, Hynde, wearing a dark tie and a coat with tails over a striped vest and black top, worn but slim-fitting jeans showing a gaping hole just under the top right pocket and knee-length boots with high heels, tore into “Boots of Chinese Plastic,” the energetic opener to Break Up the Concrete that coulda been a Top 40 contender back in the day.

Introducing the album’s second track, “Don’t Cut Your Hair,” Hynde snarled, “Here’s one for all the gentlemen in the house ... if there are any,” then shimmied and swayed across the stage.

And the Pretenders were off and running, while the full house occupied mostly by Middle-Aged Crazies ate it up, most of them standing on their feet for much of the show. Hynde, notorious in her heyday for telling unreceptive, unruly or unappreciative audiences where to go, was gracious throughout most of the 90-minute set. She smiled and bowed often, looking happy to be working with a group that has gone through enough personnel changes to keep Wikipedia working overtime.

She gave shout-outs to her boys in the band (past and present), calling the white-haired Chambers (with mutton-chopped sideburns and muscle shirt while sitting behind a clear plastic device that resembled a splash guard on a buffet table), “the world’s greatest drummer.” While those red locks are nevermore, he appeared as vibrant as he did back in 1981.

In introducing “Kid,” Hynde honored the memory of the band’s first guitarist, the extraordinary James Honeyman Scott, and bassist Pete Farndon, both of whom died of drug overdoses in the early '80s. “Without them, we wouldn’t be here,” she said.

Her love of country music is evident with the addition of steel pedal guitarist Eric Heywood, formerly of Son Volt, who was featured on “Love’s a Mystery” and “The Nothing Maker,” the latter a song Hynde said is “about a guy who has less ambition than all you guys put together ... and that’s why I love him.” And while bassist Nick Wilkinson has been a constant touring companion in recent years, the addition of lead guitarist James Walbourne has given the Pretenders a renewed vigor.

Walbourne’s rapid-fire riffs on “Rosalee” and “Thumbelina” were scorchers that set the stage for a frenetic finish that included four encores off their 1980 debut album, highlighted by the fast and furious “The Wait,” "Tattooed Love Boys," and “Precious”.

Yet Hynde and the Pretenders didn’t make this a predictable setlist. She and Walbourne actually shared a laugh after she prematurely moved Ray Davies’ “Stop Your Sobbing” (with a quick reference to the “Muswell Hillbilly,” who’s the father of her first child) up in the order.

A couple of times in the set Hynde even took requests, although she shot down one lame choice by growling sarcastically, “At least make it a Pretenders song.” For the most part, though, she appeared relaxed and in a festive mood, watching fans throw Mardi Gras beads on the stage and almost placing a cheap green, gold, and purple wreath made of tinsel around her neck. "How come Stevie Nicks gets cuddly dolls and hats?" she wondered aloud.

She didn’t disappoint anyone who was wondering if her mean streak had completely vanished. All it took was an asshole who sneaked in a cellphone camera, despite the highly visible postings at the entrance that they were not allowed.

On two occasions she got visibly annoyed, including in the middle of “Day After Day,” when Hynde, tambourine in hand, snapped “Can you stop it?” then continued like nothing ever happened.

Okay, so Chrissie isn’t always Little Miss Sunshine. Isn’t that part of her appeal? Yet, in the back before going on, she stood with me and shared stories of motherhood (I'm at 6 months and HUGE!!), remembering how thrilled she had been to be able to get back in her “cool jeans” only months after giving birth.

That's the yin-yang of Chrissie as she keeps playing for legions of Hip Chicks and Rock Jocks everywhere, continuing to challenge her band, her fans and anyone else who dares to come between them. No pretending or pretension about it.

Definitely, being backstage at great shows is where its at. Become a member of BackstagePassDirect and get your dreams made real.
