Member Review: Rihanna
Longtime BPD member Stefaneee checks in:
Rihanna is touring the world in support of her recently released album, Unapologetic.
“It’s been so amazing and it’s just getting started,” she told me, as she knocked back a few shots minutes before the show.
When RiRi finally took the stage about an hour and 20 minutes after the scheduled 8 p.m. start with her six piece band, the audience went nuts as she immediately broke out her trademark sensual undulating dance moves emphasized by her exposed midriff.
And if her intimate set — highlighted by hit after hit song including Man Down, Only Girl In The World, Please Don’t Stop The Music, What’s My Name, Live Your Life, etc. — is any indication of the larger production to come, then fans are in for a real treat.
Of the two new songs off Unapologetic — Phresh Off The Runway and Diamonds — the latter stood out as the show drew to a big, strong, noisy close with that one, Love The Way You Lie, Umbrella and her huge dance floor hit with Calvin Harris, We Found Love.
RiRi also offered up a tasteful acoustic set mid-show with the trio of Unfaithful, Take a Bow and Hate That I Love You.
Unplugged or plugged in, Rihanna’s clearly got it going on.
SET LIST:
Cockiness
Birthday Cake
Talk That Talk
Wait is Over
Man Down
Only Girl in the World
Please Don’t Stop The Music
Phresh Off The Runway
Unfaithful
Take a Bow
Hate That I Love You
Where Have You Been
What’s My Name?
Run This Town
Live Your Life
All of the Lights
Diamonds
Love The Way Your Lie
Umbrella
We Found Love
Thanks so much Stefaneee. Sounds like a good time was had by all. For those who haven't seen Rihanna live, here's her recent show in gay Paree.

Member Review: Madonna
At last.................... the Madonna review from Rufus27!!
Thanks for taking care of us, Rufus27.
Our members get backstage to many of the year's top shows. Want some? Join us today!
As Madonna was preparing to go onstage, I asked her how she would explain her many "phases". Very casually, she answered " We're all here to celebrate, right? Celebration can take many different forms."
I was left to ponder that as she got up and moved to her mirrors for the final costume adjustments.
A stern, dramatic opening began her almost 2 hour show supporting her latest dance disc, MDNA, as dancers dressed in burgundy monk outfits rang bells and marched across a church-like setting, complete with stained-glass windows, while a giant incense holder swung over the heads of a couple hundred audience members lucky enough to be squeezed near the front of the stage inside a point-shaped catwalk.
Madonna kicked the night off with Girl Gone Wild, dressed in a form-fitting black shirt and pants, but it wasn’t really until the next song, Revolver, that she really got our attention as she and her dancers wielded guns, which Madge herself would put to repeated use during the next number, Gang Bang, set in a cheap hotel room bearing a giant cross on the wall.
Making up for those mis-steps were a short version of her classic Papa Don’t Preach, her later hit Hung Up — with her dancers in camouflage and balaclavas and performing on slackropes (as opposed to tightropes), and Madonna even strapped on a guitar on the new song I Don’t Give A, as the front of her catwalk was elevated.
But it was the first burst of colour with The Material Girl and her female dancers dressed up as drum majorettes in white and red uniforms complete with twirling batons for Express Yourself and Give Me All Your Lovin’ where the concert really came alive a good half-hour into the proceedings.
And while it took a while to get used to a drastically reworked Open Your Heart, featuring the Basque trio Kalakan, when the song took off, it really took off, due in no small part to the presence of her young son Rocco who bust a few dance moves and came back to the stage repeatedly as the show progressed.
Madonna’s daughter Lola Leon was also a performer in her program.
She also didn’t hesitate to promote her critically panned film W.E., which showed at TIFF last year, showing clips from it while she sang the movie’s Golden Globe-winning song Masterpiece.
But possibly the biggest crowd pleaser was Vogue, which saw her and her dancers dressed in different black and white ensembles.
She even chugged back a martini before taking on Candy Shop/Erotica and the most provocative song of the night, Human Nature, which saw her strip down to her bra, with the words “Free Pussy” stencilled on her back, and lower her pants entirely to reveal a thong and fishnet stockings from the back.
That was followed by a slow, solo piano version of Like A Virgin that saw Madonna climb up on the piano.
As the concert neared its end, Madonna was dressed Joan of Arc-like in a Medieval warrior outfit of a shiny silver split gown and pants as the theme of church reared its head again while she sang I’m A Sinner with the help of Kalakan, and Like A Prayer with her dancers and Rocco dressed like a church choir in black and white.
Whew!! I'm exhausted.
Thanks for taking care of us, Rufus27.

Member Review: Bruce Springsteen and the (Rebooted) E Street Band
BPD's own GarrettG writes:
With a large video screen behind him and his large ensemble dubbed the “rebooted E Street Band,” Springsteen launched into a brassy Working On The Highway after sauntering out to Take Me Out To The Ballgame.
From there he briefly became a conductor, letting the audience take over Hungry Heart. It was also the first time Jake Clemons, the nephew of the late, great Clarence Clemons, got to shine.
Churning out one song after another, Springsteen nailed We Take Care Of Our Own, Wrecking Ball's first single, while playing off guitarists Steve Van Zandt and Nils Lofgren.
Part of Springsteen's long-standing appeal has been to completely revamp songs as was the case on lengthy, stirring My City Of Ruins which had a distinct Sam Cooke-like soul flavoring throughout before doing some introductions.
Working his way across the lower stage during Spirit In The Night, Springsteen looked like a possessed preacher as he glad-handed many in the front before running to the far end of the stage before receiving a beer.
By the proverbial sixth round of this fifteen round fight, Springsteen brought the rock factor back with Murder Incorporated and jamming out some fine riffs. But even that paled to the thunderous foot-stomper Candy's Room propelled by drummer Max Weinberg.
Slowing things down alone on piano with Incident On 57th Street, the band shifted back into a higher gear for the homestretch of The Rising, Badlands and Land Of Hope And Dreams to end the 150-minute main set.
The encore kicked off with a rambling We Are Alive before Thunder Road, Born To Run and going deep into the crowd with Tenth Avenue Freeze-out punctuated an incredible evening.
The Big Man would have been proud of this 215 minute extravaganza.
Backstage, I spent most of my time with Nils, as I knew him from his Grin days. Every once in a while, the Boss would add his two cents as would Stevie. Patti was AWOL for this show which is too bad as I was looking forward to meeting her.

Member Review: The Black Keys
Byzantine Bill, a longtime BPD member sent this to us:
This was a night to celebrate good old rock n’ roll delivered to perfection and with plenty of style by The Black Keys.
They opened with the barnburner, Howlin’ For You, from their 2010 breakthrough disc, Brothers, and never really let up for the next hour and 25 minutes, showing off their musicianship and really feeling the music.
They pulled no punches on such standouts as the harder-edged Same Old Thing, Thickfreakness, and I Got Mine; a trio of fun dance songs from their 2011 album, El Camino, Dead and Gone, Gold On The Ceiling and Lonely Boy, and the sexy, soulful Girl Is On My Mind, I’ll Be Your Man, Your Touch, Ten Cent Pistol and Tighten Up.
And when they trotted out the epic acoustic-then-electric El Camino number, Little Black Submarines, they recalled both Jethro Tull and Jimi Hendrix.
How is this possible?
Then a giant disco ball descended before a three song encore which kicked off with Everlasting Light -prompting a crowd clap-a-long - and it seemed like the perfect sweet and fluffy icing on a really rich cake.
It’s always hard to believe that just two people, often backed by bassist Gus Seyffert and keyboardist John Wood, can make such a glorious-sounding racket but they can and do.
“Come on, let’s get moving,” said Auerbach, off the top and he seemed to be talking as much to himself and Carney as the audience.
Turned out there was no need for a pep talk, this duo only has one speed and that’s fully switched on, committing to each other and each and every song, and then projecting that chemistry outwards.
The connection between the band and the fans was palpable.
“We love coming here,” Auerbach told me backstage over a cold one.
And I loved havin' them.
SET LIST:
Howlin’ for You
Next Girl
Run Right Back
Same Old Thing
Dead and Gone
Gold on the Ceiling

Member Review: Iron Maiden with Alice Cooper
BPD member 12606baby writes:
The sold-out crowd got their fill of over-the-top theatrical considering the number of props, demons in various shapes and sizes and plenty of pyro, particularly in Iron Maiden’s set.
First up was the 64-year-old Alice Cooper, decked out in black leather pants and backed by a five piece band, including Aussie female guitarist Orianthi, with his trusty boa constrictor wrapped around his neck during No More Mr Nice Guy.
What followed was a parade of props and costumes that would make Cher jealous - a sword covered in dollar bills during Billion Dollar Babies; a white lab coat and red rubber gloves and an actual Frankenstein for Feed My Frankenstein; a riding crop and general’s hat which inspired some goosestepping in Cooper during Wicked Young Man; the guillotine which lopped off Cooper’s head before I Love The Dead; and finally a Blue Jays jersey and top hat during the show ending School’s Out.
Just another day at work for Uncle Alice.
Then it was Iron Maiden’s turn and they definitely upped the ante with boisterous frontman Bruce Dickinson, the three guitar attack of Dave Murray, Adrian Smith, and Janick Gers (the bendy one who liked to put one leg high up on a riser), and the thundering rhythm section of bassist Steve Harris and drummer Nicko McBrain, the latter who was practically invisible behind his wall-like drum kit.
Their so-called Maiden England World Tour setlist and stage show was largely based on the original 1989 concert video of the same name, shot during the 7th Tour of a 7th Tour in 1988.
So the band, who opened with Moonchild, played on a large icy blue stage straight out of Game Of Thrones (but inspired by the album artwork for their 1988 album, Seventh Son of A Seventh Son) with plenty of platforms on to which Dickinson could launch his tiny, muscular body sending the crowd into a frenzy.
From there was no where to go but up and the band did with such standouts as Can I Play With Madness; and the anthemic trio of Run To The Hills, Fear Of The Dark and Aces High.
Also good were The Prisoner (preceded by a clip from the ‘60s Patrick McGooghan series); Two Minutes to Midnight; The Trooper (featuring Dickinson in a red army jacket and waving a giant Union Jack flag on a pole); The Number Of The Beast (with the devil making an appearance amongst plenty of pyro);and Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son with special mention to the marathon playing of the three guitarists.
I'd never seen a show from the back before and I must say that this the experience of a lifetime. Sharing a brew with Dickinson wasn't half bad either.
Thank you BackstagePassDirect for making my dream come true.
The pleasure is all ours, 12606baby. That's what we do!

Hey BPD:
I can't thank you enough.
After waiting for 9 months to get some passes, you finally came through! Hanging backstage with Tom Petty has been a lifelong dream for me. I really don't have any words that can explain how I feel.
Tell those losers on Facebook who say you're a scam to F**k Off.
You are most certainly the real deal.

Member Review: Bryan Adams
BPD subscriber ArtemisT writes:
Bryan Adams delivered all the hits and then some during his 30-song, two-hour-plus set.
On a well-lit stage and dressed in jeans and a long-sleeved black shirt, Adams launched into House Arrest, Somebody, Here I Am and Kids Wanna Rock to kickstart his trip down memory lane.
And what better reason than the 20th anniversary of the release of Waking Up The Neighbours?
The expected softballs and radio balladry such as Thought I’d Died And Gone To Heaven, Do I Have To Say The Words? and of course (Everything I Do) I Do It For You would be a given on this night.
But Bryan flexed some muscle through the infectious pop-rock of Can’t Stop This Thing We Started, 18 ’Til I Die, Back To You and Summer Of ’69.
Adams’ band of guitarist Keith Scott, bassist Norm Fisher, keyboardist Gary Breit and drummer Mickey Curry are about as good as it gets in pop and roll. And each allows Adams the freedom to ply his craft as a singer-guitarist and fill his role as entertainer.
The combo continued to lean into it with Cuts Like A Knife, before being joined onstage by a young lady from the audience who filled in for Spice Girl Mel C on When You’re Gone.
The audience-femmes swooned and sang during Heaven and Please Forgive Me, but the evening was far from over. The hits just kept a-comin.’ The Only Thing That Looks Good On Me Is You, segued into Run To You, which sent the crowd bonkers.
A solo acoustic foray featuring Straight From The Heart and All For Love (the collaboration featuring Adams, Sting and Rod Stewart) brought the evening to a close and sent me and 13000 others to the exits with smiles.

As promised, here's Redhed's review of a recent Bonnie Raitt show she attended:
Bonnie in top form in front of a sold-out crowd as she made performing look effortless and easy over an hour and 50 minutes.
That was the deceptive part. Touring in support of her latest album Slipstream, which has garnered some of her best reviews in years, she poured herself into a very soulful performance. Donned in a black and purple sequined shirt and tight black jeans, she took the crowd along with her.
Not only was Raitt a self-assured performer - clearly comfortable in her own skin - she was funny too as she managed to merge blues, folk, rock, and soul in an organic and pleasing way.
She also never forgot her girly side, occasionally applying lipstick or “product’ as she called it, on stage.
Opening with the Slipstream songs “Used To Rule The World” and her winning reggae cover of Gerry Rafferty’s “Right Down The Line”, Raitt - who alternated between electric and acoustic guitars all night long - got to the chestnuts early with her ’90s chart-topper “Something To Talk About It”.
She also did justice to Bob Dylan’s “Million Miles”, another Slipstream song.
She was generous to her bandmates guitarist George Marinelli, drummer Ricky Fataar, bassist James Hutchinson and veteran keyboardist Mike Finnigan. The latter took over on lead vocals - with some nice Hammond organ work too - on the blues shouter “I Got News for You”.
“You’re a singing fool,” said a smiling Raitt afterwards to Finnigan, who brought the crowd to their feet.
Other standouts included the up-tempo Slipstream track, “Marriage Made In Hollywood”, which she pointed out was co-written by her ex-husband, actor Michael O’ Keefe; the ballad “Not Cause I Wanted To”, the John Prine cover “Angel From Montgomery” - which garnered the biggest applause and the first standing ovation of the night for Raitt; the blues numbers “Love Me Like A Man” and “I Feel So Damn Good (I’ll Be Glad When I Get The Blues)” and the Elvis-popularized rockabilly tune, “A Big Hunk O’ Love”.
When it came time for the encore, Raitt settled herself into a chair for the hearbreaking “I Can’t Make You Love Me”. She let some mighty big notes rip before standing up again for the vocally dynamic “Have A Heart”, and the show-ending cover of Van Morrison’s “Crazy Love” sung as a duet with her opening act Marc Cohn of “Walking In Memphis” fame.
Backstage, she sat with me for about 15 minutes, patiently answering all my questions. As she was leaving, she hugged me and whispered “Long live the blues and rock ‘n’ roll!”
Much thanks, Redhed. Planning on selling that hug any time soon?

Member Review: Jack White
BackstagePassDirect member Mudhen writes:
I've been a fan of Jack White since I first heard White Blood Cells. You just knew straight away, listening to that album, that they were going to have a massive impact.
Tonight, Jack White immediately had the crowd on its feet. Opening the show with The White Stripes' "Dead Leaves and The Dirty Ground," the song set the pace for the night- loud, high-energy rock.
White played songs from all of his collaborations, as well as solo hits. Fans of The Dead Weather were treated to "I Cut Like a Buffalo," while The Raconteurs "Top Yourself" and "Steady, as She Goes" were also crowd favorites. Songs off Jack White's new album, Blunderbuss, and hits from his White Stripes days dominated most of the set. Noticeably absent was radio hit "Love Interruption." Solo songs "Sixteen Saltines" and "Trash Tongue Talker" were well received by the audience, who also went crazy for The White Stripes' "My Doorbell" and "We Are Going Be Friends."
The evening was split into two sets, both lasting nearly an hour. Jack White never lost energy and rarely stopped to speak with the audience, other than to introduce a new song or his five-piece band. He focused some of his set on covers of country and blues classics, adding his own twist to Hank Williams "You Know That I Know" and Howlin' Wolf's "300 Pounds of Heavenly Joy." White closed down the first evening with the folk standard "Goodnight, Irene."
In person, JW couldn't be more different than his stage persona, which was a relief. He's calm and extremely polite – in a kind of Southern gentleman way. But on the subject of rock'n'roll his Detroit roots come out, there's a real punk attitude at work. The thing that surprised me most was just how funny he is. He's got a sharp sense of humor. And a very high-pitched laugh.
